A field research and a professional training of students, titled PUBLIC SPACES OF THE CITY OF RIJEKA, took place within the Urban futrures project on October 17 to 21, 2022.
Graduate students from the following universities participated:
Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Zagreb
Culturology, Faculty od Humanities and Social Sciences, Rijeka
Cultural Studies and Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities, University of Primorska
The aim of this field research is to investigate selected public spaces in Rijeka using qualitative methods (ethnography of space and place); map the social dynamics and practices related to the selected locations; explore historical layers and the symbolic dimension of space; detect neuralgic points in these areas; analyze meanings that people inscribe in certain spaces and how they think these spaces could and should function; analyze urban social, economic and political processes through (contested) microlocations. Conceptually, the research is carried out within the concept of “spatialized culture” (Low, 2017).
