Field teaching in Karlovac

Mirna Tkalčić Simetić participated from 9 to 12 May 2025 in field classes organized as part of the curriculum of the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology at the University of Zadar, under the mentorship of Tomislav Augustinčić. As part of the fieldwork, she gave a lecture to students on exploring the city on foot (Gulin Zrnić and Tkalčić Simetić 2024).

The aim of the research was to explore the making of urban atmospheres and everyday life within Zvijezda, the historic core of Karlovac, using the ethnographic method of “walking ethnography.” This urban area was not only affected by the 2020 earthquakes in central Croatia but has also been exposed to invasive infrastructural works since 2022 as part of the Karlovac – Duga Resa Agglomeration project.
