At its core, the book moves away from approaches that seek to detect, eliminate, or correct spatial errors according to the normative criteria of late modernity, often reproducing or deepening existing inequalities in the process. Instead, it advocates an approach rooted in the present and distanced from narratives of linear progress, one that opens towards the future through speculative methods, anticipatory practices, and resourcefulness, as well as through imagining possible worlds through the lens of a broken and fragile world. Within this emerging paradigm, error becomes a mirror of late modernity, a teacher, and an accomplice in creating worlds (worldmaking) that enable a more just coexistence of all living beings. Such an approach is grounded in care, the assumption of responsibility, and the application of acquired knowledge, opening up space for context-sensitive and experimental spatial interventions.
One of the publication’s notable features is its interdisciplinary bringing together of architecture, urbanism, philosophy, and cultural theory, establishing a critical and generative framework for developing new methodologies and approaches to learning from spatial errors. Relevant to a wide range of readers – from architects and urban planners to researchers, artists, designers, activists, and local communities – the book calls for active participation in shaping spaces and futures. In this light, the Croatian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale serves as a node within broader processes of knowledge production, education, and working with errors: processes that are anchored and articulated in the spatial installation while simultaneously extending beyond it, without calling into question its artistic value or its contribution to these processes.
